There’s something quite lovely in realizing that I’m never fully alone.
In our lives, what are the defining moments? How about who is in our life, our family or our friends? In this episode, I interview Benjamin Gunning, a leader at a global design firm who is also a nationally recognized philanthropic advisor, and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California.
Benjamin discusses the experience of losing his stepfather at 16 and his mother at 27, undergoing a long period of anticipatory grief during each illness, and growing closer to his family through the crucible of his parents' illness and loss.
Benjamin talks about:
The experience of losing both parents to breast cancer at formative times in Benjamin’s life.
His feelings of “Pre-grief” (anticipatory grief) and skills that cross over to different realms of his life.
How his mother’s illness allowed for a deeper connection with his siblings and extended family.
